Before the sentencing got underway, Nichols addressed the judge. He said he is sorry for what he did, and that he will not bring dishonor to the jurors’ decision to spare his life.

Gee, that makes things much easier! Since the rapist/murderer is so remorseful and harmless, we can trust those three holdout jurors to guard Nichols. I’m sure they’ll be happy to take personal responsibility for him, since they decided his life was so valuable.

I totally agree with Java Junkie. However I don’t think that the FEDS will leave it at that. He killed an FBI agent and I think that they will try him for that – with the DP in place. Please let me know if you have information to the contrary.
Thank you again for keeping us so very fully informed. I hope you know how much we appreciate it!

Yes, according to Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard, U.S. District Attorney David Nahmias is looking into whether to take the case to a federal jury. The death of Customs Agent David Wilhelm would be a death penalty trial. (Nichols also faces charges in Gwinnett County for the Ashley Smith ordeal.)

I have followed this trial and can not believe that those 3 jurors did not vote for death. I certainly hope the federal govt. will pursue the death penalty for the murder of Agent Wilhelm. In cases like this where the evidence is overwhelming and he admits to a crime of this severity the death penalty should be a given.
P.S. Shame on BN for letting the defense put his daughter on the stand – to me that was unforgivable on his part.

Angelone1214, why should you think a sociopath that kills a judge sitting on the bench, a court reporter for baking cookies for the jury, a man in his own home plus a deputy chasing him for breaking out of jail would not stoop low enough to put his estranged daughter on the stand to try to save his life? Nichols is arrogant enough to believe his life has more value than Judge Barnes.
